Then and now
Then
The Kailasa temple at Ellora was not built. It was cut, from the top down, out of one mass of rock, and UNESCO describes it as the largest monolithic temple. Its makers had to see the whole building inside the stone before the first cut, because nothing could be added afterwards.
Now
Mumbai is India’s financial capital. The Bombay Stock Exchange, founded there in 1875, is the oldest in Asia. Pune adds engineering, automotive and software strength, and the state’s policy reaches further, to Nashik, Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
Policy
Maharashtra’s cabinet approved the state’s Global Capability Centre Policy on 30 September 2025. It aims to create four lakh (400,000) jobs between 2025 and 2030 and to draw centres to cities beyond Mumbai and Pune. Incentive details will be confirmed with the state delegation.
