Then and now

Then

Kalamkari means work done with a pen. In Srikalahasti, artists draw on cotton freehand with a bamboo pen and natural dyes, and a cloth passes through twenty-three steps before it is finished. In Machilipatnam the same tradition is printed from carved blocks.

Now

India’s rockets leave from Andhra Pradesh. The Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, on the state’s coast, is the country’s main spaceport and has been launching since 1971. A cloth carried through twenty-three steps and a launch carried through its countdown ask for the same patience.

Policy

Andhra Pradesh’s IT and Global Capability Centres Policy 4.0 is valid for five years from 12 December 2024. It supports co-working developers in larger cities and neighbourhood workspaces in smaller ones, so a centre can start small and close to where people live. Incentive details will be confirmed with the state delegation.

Culture and cuisine

Kuchipudi, one of India’s classical dances, takes its name from a village in the state. Expect an Andhra table: rice, lentils, sharp pickles and a generous hand with chilli. Alongside Kalamkari there are painted wooden toys from Kondapalli and silk from Dharmavaram.
