Then and now
Then
Dholavira, in the salt desert of Kutch, was a Harappan city occupied from about 3000 to 1500 BCE. In a harsh, dry landscape its people built reservoirs and channels to catch and store water. UNESCO, which inscribed the site in 2021, calls it a sophisticated water management system.
Now
GIFT City, in Gandhinagar district, is India’s first International Financial Services Centre: a place built so that global finance can be done from Indian soil, with its own regulator. Around it, the state’s policy aims to draw capability centres in finance, technology and engineering.
Policy
Gujarat launched its Global Capability Centre Policy for 2025 to 2030 at GIFT City on 11 February 2025. It aims for at least 250 new centres, more than 50,000 jobs and investment of more than ₹10,000 crore. Incentive details will be confirmed with the state delegation.
